Birmingham Audubon Great Backyard Bird Count

The Birmingham Zoo and Birmingham Audubon are teaming up for our annual Great Backyard Bird Count! The event unites birdwatchers from across the globe as they track bird species found in their own backyards, parks and local spaces. Seasonal bird counts have been a central part of Birmingham Audubon’s work ever since its founding in 1946. Hear bird watching tips from Birmingham Audubon experts and take part in bird conservation activities in the Junior League of Birmingham – Hugh Kaul Children’s Zoo and Alabama Wilds. Participants are invited to take part in the bird walk from 8am-10am and afterwards enjoy crafts and activities from 10am-2pm. WHERE Birmingham Zoo TIME 8am - 10am MEETUP TIME Join us at 8 a.m. in front of the Children Zoo entrance to the right of the main entrance. CRAFTS & ACTIVITIES 10am - 2pm at the Children's Zoo Barn and Granny's Front Porch WHAT TO BRING If you have your own binoculars, you’ll definitely want to bring them along. 39th Annual Black Heritage Festival

Theme: Poetry: The Pulse of a New Day Join us as we celebrate Black History Month with the power of poetry at the 39th Annual Black Heritage Festival! Coordinated by Mrs. Georgia Calhoun and located at the Longleaf Botanical Gardens, the festival returns with orations from children in Pre-Kindergarten to High School. The festival begins at 10:00 AM. All children wanting to participate in the oration competition must be registered by 9:30 AM Saturday, February 16. African-inspired vendors will line the Longleaf Botanical Gardens’ lobby with an assortment of books, jewelry, clothing, and more available for your shopping pleasure from 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM. Baby Boy’s BBQ will be onsite with lunch available for purchase. Festival wristbands grant complimentary admission to the Anniston Museum of Natural History and the Berman Museum for all festival attendees on Saturday, February 16. Entry forms for this competition may be obtained by visiting the Birmingham Children's Theatre webpage: http://www.bct123.org/maker-challenge/ In conjunction with Career and Tech Month, National Engineers’ Week, and BCT’s production of THE HUNDRED DRESSES, Alabama Public Television, Birmingham Children’s Theatre, and MAKEbhm are sponsoring a MAKER CHALLENGE to celebrate innovation, creativity, and problem solving through technology and craftsmanship. Guidelines: 1). Students identify a problem in everyday life. 2). Students use their creativity and skills to innovate a solution through technology, craftsmanship, or a combination of the two. 3). Students present their prototypes and projects for adjudication on February 16. 4). Projects may be created by an individual or a group. 5). Projects will be judged in two separate categories and age groups: Middle School Technology, Middle School Craftsmanship, High School Technology, and High School Craftsmanship. Middle School is grades 6-8 and High School is grades 9-12. 6). Students and their sponsoring teacher will receive a complimentary ticket to THE HUNDRED DRESSES performance held on the day of the challenge. Friends and family members of competing students will have the opportunity to purchase discounted tickets to the same performance. Submission Schedule: January 25: Entry forms due February 16: Maker Challenge Exhibition Schedule: 10am: BCT Lobby opens 12:00-12:30pm: Students set up entries 12:30: Judging begins 2:30pm: THE HUNDRED DRESSES performance for participants and general public 4 pm: (approximately): Talkback/question and answer session with Makers followed by Presentation of Challenge Winners Presentation Guidelines and Regulations: 1). All students will be provided with a table to display their project/prototype. Tablecloths will not be provided. 2). Power outlets will be made available only if requested on the submission form. 3). Students should be prepared to give a 2 to 5 minute presentation of their project in which they discuss the problem they identified and how their project aims to solve it.
